The ASA/Rail combo on the test marker | Custom Products has evolved from a small part of the operation at Mesa Custom Machining to one of the major reasons for the parent company's success. They started in the late '90's with a high quality, reasonably priced one-piece barrel and quickly evolved their product line into 2 piece barrels, accessories for all of the major markers out there.
Custom Products has led the way in designing top of the line Air Source Adapters (ASA) for use at the top levels of play. An ASA is often a severely under-rated part of a marker setup, but in reality they're an integral part of a marker setup and choosing poorly can lead to serious problems on the field.
The Custom Products Pro Mini ASA and Mini Drop are new for the 2008 season, and it was rolled out during World Cup 2007. The ASA incorporates an on-off to allow players to turn off and degas their markers during off field time, and during fills. As usual, 6061 alloy aluminum was used as the material for the parts. 6061 is widely used in the aircraft industry for it's strength and durability.
We mounted the ASA and drop combo on a Dangerous Power Threshold, which was anodized the same red dust color as the ASA and drop. Despite being manufactured in two very different parts of the world, the marker and the ASA/Drop combo matched extremely closely in color and texture.
Installation took roughly 10 minutes, using the supplied mounting screws for the rail and the 1/8" NPT plug to seal off one side of the ASA. The user has the option to attach the macro-line or braided steel hose to either the right or left side of the ASA, depending on what hand the player primarily uses to hold his marker. Custom Products uses an o-ring to keep the on-off knob from turning outwards and shutting the air supply off to the marker. During testing it did an admirable job of keeping the air flowing into the marker. During the review, we used a Centerflag Products 420SV and Custom Products LP air system to mate up to the CP ASA.
With an MSRP of $42 for the Pro Mini ASA, and a price of $20 for the Pro Mini Rail, the combination is maybe a bit pricey, but for those that demand the best in materials, workmanship and intelligent design in the often overlooked ASA market, the Custom Products Pro Mini ASA and Mini Rail are hard to beat. Available in the standard black, blue, red and silver colors, as well as colors like pewter, purple and chrome. For more information check out www.customproducts.us
