This past weekend, the annual Big Game was held at County Paintball in Millville, New Jersey. The Big Game format is played on a single 5 man field, with as many as twenty players per side vying for control of the center flag. The event, as part of the County Paintball club is one of the main events during the year. The County Paintball Club, although it may sound exclusive is simply anyone who attends regular Thursday night games at county, or the occasional Saturday “random draw” tournament.
The club is mainly oriented towards beginners, with Thursday night games running similar to how a scenario game plays. When eliminated, a player exits the field, and then is immediately able to re-enter the field if he wishes. Each game lasts for thirty minutes and at five minute intervals whichever team has control of the flag in the center scores points. Flag control is decided by a pole with both team colors on each end. A brave soul must run to the center of the field, reach his arm out and pull the flag from the base, then replace it with the appropriate colored end. To help new players who are afraid of being marked at uncomfortably close distances, no team is allowed to cross past center field.
The turnout for the Big Game was strong, almost fifty people came and participated in the event. Many familiar faces were present, as well as some new ones. Ages of players ranged from the very old, such as County Mike (sorry Mike) to as young as ten. Equipment ranged from high-end to entry level, and with the hopperball only rule, the difference in firepower was kept to a minimum.
Play was competitive throughout the day, with both sides pushing hard toward the center and control of the flag changed multiple times throughout each round. Point totals for each side were very close, most of the time the gap between the winning team and the losing was in the single digits, which kept everyone playing aggressive since every point could make the difference.
