NAWL's "Terror Attack 2006"

The North American Woodsball League kicked off its inaugural event this past weekend (August 4th through the 6th) under less than auspicious circumstances; plagued by heat, threatening weather forecasts, the ever-increasing price of oil, a newly minted front in the war against Islamic Fascism and a hurricane that fortunately died a-borning, Joe Moffo of NAWL nevertheless persevered and played host to over 100 players in a game that pitted the terrorists and their infamous leader, the Sand Spider, against the CTU counter-terrorists forces.

Following heated battles on the newly minted NAWL facility just outside of Jacksonville, Florida (a field facility that boasted bunkers, forts, tree-mounted cameras and light towers in the woods for night play!) the conclusion of the event saw eerie parallels to the real world; the terrorists managed to acquire 7 nuclear devices, 6 of which were exchanged for a bundle of cash with the CTU, leaving them with control of 1 nuke, the launch facility and the launch codes.  During the final battle, the CTU managed to prevent the launch, but did not capture the Sand Spider and left the terrorists in possession of the nuke; what they’ll do with it is anybody’s guess, but we’re sure to see the return of the Sand Spider at future NAWL games.

Vengeance Paintball Distributors was on hand to provide their XO Industries Hot Box, V1 and Menace paintballs; providing a variety of paintball grades has become a hallmark of VPD’s scenario event support and the concept was well received by the attendees, as each player was able to choose a brand of paint appropriate to their markers and shooting styles. VPD provided a reefer truck to beat the heat and humidity

Also attending in support of the event was SOBE Paintball of Miami and Ground Zero paintball of South Carolina, additional members of the VPD distribution network; both companies were generous in their support of the game’s prize package.

Rounding out the trade show was Splatman of Jacksonville, an area retail store and Sonix, manufacturers and suppliers of custom soft goods, who also provided much needed player support and prizes.

Triad Paintball, an area paintball field, supplied the fill station and support personnel and Paintball Adventures of Jacksonville was on hand to provide rental equipment for those players needing markers and masks.

68Caliber participated, both playing in and covering the event; Antonio ‘727 Hit Man’ Braccilli of the 68Caliber Review Crew received a Best Player award and will soon be announcing the availability of his full color autographed posters; Tex from JSO received the MVP award.

NAWL is a non-profit membership organization that is seeking to create a scenario-based competition league across the country.  Among their numerous programs was support of active-duty military personnel with reduced entry fees and specially priced paint; GenXGlobal and DGG Taser underwrote these expenses and are to be commended for their support of our frontline troops.

Prizes awarded at the event included product from OpsGear, GenXGlobal, JTUSA, XO Industries/VPD, Tippmann, JSO, Atomic Ordnance and many others.

Highlights of the event included the attendance of NOCER Productions’ Andy Graham who served as general of the CTU team (as well as pre-game and game production assistance), Craig Hart as the general of the Terrorists, Team Smite, Section 8 and Team Vengeance, who walked away with the sportsmanship award.

The NAWL game was highly unusual for a number of reasons, not the least of which was the placement of light towers in the woods for night time play, golf cart rentals on site and a slightly different approach to missions and choreographing than can be found at most games.

NAWL’s next event will be the Ohio War on Terror, November 11th and 12th, which will be held on an abandoned factory site surrounded by 25 acres of woods.
